Alpine Shire Council has been successful in obtaining a grant from Sustainability Victoria’s Recycling Victoria Councils Fund for a research project into the feasibility of establishing a ‘reuse shop’ (upcycle or reuse) at any, or all, of the three existing transfer stations located at and Mount Beauty, Myrtleford and Porepunkah. The study should consider options such as a transfer station recycle shop run by Council or a local social enterprise, or possibly even an unstaffed shed.
Staff at Council’s three transfer stations regularly report visitors sighting items that they would like to take away; however, there is currently no provision within Council to facilitate such a transaction. A unique opportunity in the Alpine Shire context is the inclusion of the opportunity for tourists to donate and acquire items for short term use while on holidays. Currently significant amounts of furniture, skis, snowboards, boots, e-waste, and renovation waste are taken to Council’s three transfer stations.
Other regional Victorian councils have tip shops or have recently undergone similar feasibility studies, including through round one of the Recycling Victoria Councils Fund. To avoid duplication, this research project will involve a desktop analysis of existing models with similar contexts to allow evidence-based decisions on the most appropriate model. Combining this analysis with on the ground consultation and investigations at Council’s three transfer stations will inform the most effective solutions to implement.
