Alpine Shire Council (Council) is seeking to employ the services of a consultant to prepare three traffic and transport assessments that will inform a future Traffic and Transport Strategy for Alpine Shire. This will include:
1. A Traffic Impact Assessment for the service townships of Bright/Porepunkah, Mount Beauty/Tawonga South and Myrtleford, to take into account future growth of these townships identified in Council’s draft Alpine Shire Land Development Strategy (LDS);
2. A car parking study for the townships of Bright/Porepunkah, Mount Beauty/Tawonga South and Myrtleford; and
3. A gap analysis on active transport (walking and cycling) within the four service townships that can be utilised for commuting and recreation purposes.
The assessments will assist in providing an evidence-base that can be utilised to inform a future Traffic and Transport Strategy, which will seek to understand and cater for the transport needs for residents and businesses to the year 2041 and beyond, and understand whether this need can be apportioned to land identified for future urban growth.
Planning for new development must also consider providing for and promoting sustainable and active transport modes in accordance with the Victorian Government’s Movement and Place Framework, and have regard for key state policy directions such as the ’20 minute neighbourhood’ concept, to ensure people can access a wide range of everyday needs by a range of transport modes, not just cars. Bright and surrounds are world-class cycling destinations for locals and tourists alike, with work needing to be undertaken to ensure that active transport links are enhanced in line with continued population and tourism growth.
