Alpine Shire Council is seeking the services of suitably qualified consultants to undertake the development of a Cycle Safety Strategy for the Alpine Shire.
Visitation to our region has increased steadily over the past 5 years by (on average) 15% per annum. Cycle tourism across road cycling, mountain biking, and rail trail use has grown significantly in the past 5 years and is forecast to more than double in the next 7 years from 119,004 to 255,434 visitors by 2025. Alpine Shire is seeing stress on road networks due to increased numbers of cars and bikes using the two major roads in the Shire.
The Cycle Safety Strategy will adopt a multiuser approach, assuming roads will remain accessible to all vehicles including bicycles. The Strategy should identify hot spots where cycle and road infrastructure meet, and on roads where dual use is not working well, and will recommend road treatments to improve safety at these locations. In addition, the Strategy will recommend educational approaches for both cyclists and drivers that will improve safety outcomes.
