Stackey Gully Creek is located in the pine plantations/native forest south of Great Alpine Road, with a short and steep catchment. Currently, the creek is directed through a small culvert under Great Alpine Road in a south easterly direction, eventually draining into the Ovens River. However, the channel and culvert frequently flood, causing nuisance flooding to existing residences east of Stackey Gully Road and restricting new development on the Deague site.
The project aims to address the flooding issues and optimize the alignment to facilitate the development of residential land north of Great Alpine Road. The realignment plan involves retaining the current creek location along Stackey Gully Road and acquiring private property to the northeast, where the creek will be aligned through. The project area encompasses the road corridor along Stackey Gully Road, private property to the northeast, and a 600-meter section along the Ovens River.
Given the cultural heritage sensitivity of the area, as outlined in Regulation 26 of the Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018, a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) is required under Section 46(a) of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
