PURPOSE:
The purpose of this project is to facilitate higher levels of recycled content use in the roads sector through increased use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).
The project will investigate the properties of rejuvenators for use in asphalt containing RAP such that any detrimental effects on the performance of mixes containing these materials is prevented. This is expected to lead to an increased acceptance of rejuvenators and allow higher RAP contents in new asphalt.
This work will inform the development of methods and specifications used by road agencies.
SCOPE:
• An extensive literature review of international and Australasian research and practice to investigate the benefits and risks of using rejuvenators.
• Properties of RAP and rejuvenators that must be considered when assessing the long-term safety and performance impacts of rejuvenators.
• An expert assessment of the feasibility of adopting rejuvenators and the associated test methods, specifications, practices etc in Australia and New Zealand.
• Recommendation of further work, which may include binder and asphalt testing, to implement the findings of the project.
The development or an update to test methods and specifications, and laboratory testing and/or field trials are not in the scope of this project.
DELIVERABLES:
This project will produce the following final deliverables:
• Technical Report:
o outlining an extensive literature review to identify international practice and methods used to specify rejuvenators, and the opportunities and risks associated with the use, including any impact on asphalt properties
o addressing other items raised in the suggested methodology
o identifying assessment protocols
o recommending further work, which may include binder and asphalt testing, to implement the findings of the project.
• A webinar.
