Purpose:
This project will investigate the implications of automated steering functions in current and potential near future model vehicles for road operations. The findings from this investigation will support road agencies to optimise road design, maintenance and operation for automated vehicles with the primary aim of reducing road trauma on Australia and New Zealand’s roads.
Deliverables:
A final project report which includes:
• A project summary, and key recommendations
• A review of current research in Australia and international projects on best practice in road design for automated steering functions
• Data and findings from both on-road evaluation and off-road study testing the performance of lane marking under a range of environmental and infrastructure variables
• Findings from consultation with vehicle manufacturers, road authorities and other stakeholders to identify and validate issues being experienced with their systems recognising lane markings.
• Analysis of findings identifying any risks, limitations or assumptions.
• Where justified any recommendations for amendments to Austroads’ Guides, state and territory guidelines and Australian Standards Relating to pavement markings (and associated standards called up by this standard).
• A policy impact assessment of the benefits of providing well maintained infrastructure for automate steering functions, and the cost benefit of upgrading high risk roads to include the capability to support automate steering functions. This should estimated timelines for fleetwide deployment of automated steering systems.
• Any recommendations for future research to address gaps.
A visual presentation of key issues identified in the form of a .pptx slide deck with associated videos/photos for use by Austroads and the consultant in presentations.
A program of engagement (webinars, workshops and presentations) with road operators including state and territories, local government and private road operators to advise on best practices for lane design, maintenance and operations.
