APT6213 Sustainable Test for Measuring Rutting Performance of Binders in Asphalt

PURPOSE:
This project will investigate whether an internationally-used test device, the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), can be used to rank the rutting performance of polymer modified binders (PMBs) in the national PMB specification (Austroads AGPT/T190). The current specification parameter for rutting performance (Consistency 6% at 60°C) is determined using an Australian-developed device (the Elastometer) which is no longer manufactured or supported. This project proposal includes two years of development work towards a new DSR parameter equivalent to the Elastometer Consistency 6% at 60°C parameter, so that the rutting performance of PMBs can be ranked using a widely-used sustainable device. This will allow jurisdictions to continue to assess the rutting performance of binders prior to their use in asphalt pavements.
This project will also update four Austroads test methods which are listed in AGPT/T190 which have been identified by the Austroads Bituminous Surfacing Working Group (BSWG) as requiring updating.

Publication of an Austroads technical report, updates to four Austroads test methods and a project webinar.
