Tender Details
Purpose:

The project seeks to develop test methods that can be used for the performance-based design of asphalt mixes.

Deliverables:

This project is expected to produce the following outputs:

* Updates to the following existing national test methods (or recommend the adoption of existing internationally recognised test methods) based on experimental work that assesses issues raised in Section 5 of Austroads Report AP-T331-18 for the following test methods:
- AS/NZS 2891.2.1 Methods of Sampling and Testing Asphalt: Sample Preparation: Mixing, Quartering and Conditioning of Asphalt in the Laboratory
- AS/NZS 2891.2.2 Methods of Sampling and Testing Asphalt: Sample Preparation: Compaction of Asphalt Test Specimens using a Gyratory Compactor (for the purposes of determining the workability of asphalt mixes)
- AG:PT/T232 Stripping Potential of Asphalt: Tensile Strength Ratio
- AG:PT/T231 Deformation Resistance of Asphalt Mixtures by the Wheel Tracking Test
- AG:PT/T210 Verification Procedure for a Wheel Tracking Test Device.

* A new national test method (or recommend the adoption of an existing internationally recognised test method) for the laboratory assessment of asphalt permeability.

* A new national test method that describes the verification procedure for asphalt flexural beam test devices that are capable of testing asphalt beams in accordance with AG:PT.T274 (as well as any associated updates to AG:PT/T274).

* An Austroads Technical Report that summarises flexural modulus, fatigue resistance and deformation resistance test results for standard asphalt mixes.

* A testing matrix that can be used to establish indicative performance limits as well as the relatability and reproducability of the tests in subsequent years.

* A project proposal that outlines the next stage (Stage 2) of research needed to develop a national performance-based asphalt specification.

* Two (2) project webinars.
