Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to verify compliance of bridge barrier designs and guidelines against the relevant Australian Standards that have been recently updated, and the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH).
This project will update the 2013 Austroads Standardised Bridge Barrier Designs Guidelines (AP-R445-13), to align with the current:
• Australian Standard AS/(NZS) 5100: Series 2017– Bridge Design
• Australian Standard AS/(NZS) 3845: Series 2017 – Road safety barrier systems and devices
• American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH).

Scope:
The project will have two phases:
Phase 1 - Literature review and development of options and work program for Phase 2
• Assess and review existing international and local bridge barrier designs.
• Identify issues and shortcomings in the Austroads Standardised Bridge Barrier Designs Guidelines.
• Development of options/solutions to be reviewed by the Project Working Group and endorsed by the Bridges Task Force.
• A hold point to be held at the end of this phase to confirm the work plan for Phase 2.

Phase 2 – Crash testing
• Conduct full-scale crash testing of a regular and/or a medium performance barrier to verify the structural performance of a bridge barrier designed by Transport for NSW. The purpose of the testing is to demonstrate compliance of the barrier to AS5100, AS3845 and MASH. Refer to the Transport for NSW Standard Drawings for further information.
• Provide recommendations and update the Austroads Standardised Bridge Barrier Designs Guidelines.
• Develop an Austroads Research Report, which includes proposed updates to Guidelines Report AP-R445-13, and outlines the recommendations as an outcome of the crash testing.


Deliverables:
This project will produce the following deliverables:
• Research Report
o which includes proposed updates to Guidelines Report AP-R445-13, and outlines the recommendations as an outcome of the crash testing.
• Updated edition of the Austroads Standardised Bridge Barrier Designs Guidelines.
o Updates to the Guidelines to be provided as track changes in a word document, depending on the extent of the changes in consultation with the Austroads Project Manager.
• A Webinar.
