Tender Details

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this project is to reduce the environmental impact and improve the sustainability of sprayed seals. It will inform transport agencies of new and emerging alternatives to traditional materials and technologies to enhance the life and reduce the environmental impact of sprayed seals.

SCOPE:
The project will identify and discuss new and emerging environmentally friendly, sustainable technologies and practices, and innovative sealing materials and methods. The project will undertake research including industry consultation and an international literature review on the following:
• Methods to reduce cutter useage such as foamed bitumen spraying, synchronised sprayers, and developments in bitumen emulsion technologies.
• Technologies to reduce the spraying temperature of binders including those currently employed to facilitate warm mix asphalt production.
• Alternatives to existing materials such as bio-cutters, synthetic aggregates and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).
• Methods to extend the life of current material sources through the application of bitumen extenders or blending of aggregates from different quarries, and retention of existing surface aggregates.
• Method to extend the life of sprayed seals by delaying binder hardening.
• Providing an overview on the impact of climate change on seal performance.
• Innovative practices that may extend seal life.

DELIVERABLES:
This project will produce the following final deliverables:
• Research report
• Project data
• Webinar.
