Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the implications of traffic sign recognition features in current model vehicles for road operators.
The project will identify issues with current traffic sign deployments, recommend changes to traffic sign guidelines and standards, and develop a program of information and engagement with road authorities.
This project is expected to produce a report and a program of engagement.
The report will include:
• a review of current international practice regarding traffic signing practice for traffic sign recognition systems
• a detailed outline of the methodology used for the evaluation
• a description of each of the camera technologies evaluated
• issues found based on on-road evaluation and stakeholder consultation, highlighting whether the issue can only be resolved by road operators, or by vehicle system calibration or design
• current international practices
• guidelines and recommendations.
The program of engagement will include webinars, workshops and presentations with road operators (including state and territories, local government and private road operators) to advise on best practice. At a minimum this should include the final project webinar and three presentations/workshops to cover: Qld/Vic/NSW/ACT; New Zealand; and WA/NT/SA. Content of the presentation/webinars will include:
• the international review
• findings from the evaluation
• analysis of the issues
• a summary and of the recommendations and guidelines for road operators and vehicle manufacturers.
