Purpose

The purpose of this project is to ensure road transport and traffic agencies and industry can reliably predict pavement condition and make justifiable funding decisions from their Pavement Management Systems (PMS).

The key objective is to revise existing Austroads deterioration models that represent network pavement performance of various loading and climate conditions observed in Australia and New Zealand using observational data available from long term performance sites as well as ‘big data’.

Road deterioration models help predicting future road condition and assessing maintenance needs. Existing Austroads road deterioration models used by road agencies and industry were developed in 2008 using data from a limited number of long-term pavement performance/long-term pavement performance maintenance (LTPP/LTPPM) sites. These models need to be revised utilising additional data and information available to improve their explanatory powers that support wider loading and climate conditions observed in Australia and New Zealand. Acceptance and usefulness of such robust models will be much greater in road agencies and industry.

Since the original model development, a further 10 years of observational data is available from LTPP/LTPPM sites. Additionally, ‘big data’, i.e. more than 20 years of network level pavement condition and other ancillary data collected and managed by road agencies is also available. It is expected that the deterioration models revised using all this data will better represent network condition experienced around Australasia.

It is expected that the deterioration models revised using all this data will better represent network condition experienced around Australasia.

By updating the models, this project will improve road agency, local government, and industry’s ability to develop reliable funding estimates and works programs. It will also support heavy vehicle road reform initiatives including development of a forward-looking cost base.

Deliverables

Updated RD models, in algorithm form, in a series of four Austroads Technical Reports for each of the RD models for the deterioration of roughness, rutting, cracking and strength.

One webinar to cover all of the RD models.
