PURPOSE:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the issues associated with managing the construction, operation and maintenance of road tunnels in a sustainable manner and to make subsequent updates to the relevant parts of the Austroads Guide to Road Tunnels.
The update to the Guide will provide guidance to owners, operators, designers, and those constructing tunnels of how to consider and address sustainability during the lifecycle of road tunnels.
The sustainability of road tunnels has become an increasingly important topic to be covered in the Austroads Guide to Road Tunnels. This information will assist practitioners to ensure that existing and new road tunnels are designed, built, maintained and operated in a sustainable manner.
The four parts of the Guide to Road Tunnels provide high level guidance to practitioners involved in the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of road tunnels in Australia and New Zealand. Principles and standards identified are to be based on Australasian and international experience. International practices have been considered in the light of Australasian experience and adopted (where appropriate), cognisant of Australasian conditions and legislation.

• Part 2: Planning, Design and Commissioning
• Part 3: Operation and Maintenance
• Part 4: Retrofitting Tunnels.
