About the Initiative

The Pacific Islands Forum has taken the first steps in building cooperation to enhance trade opportunities between the Pacific Islands and Mauritius. At the cornerstone of this collaboration, is building cooperation between the Pacific private sector - businesses, and industry & employer organisations - and Business Mauritius, the apex body representing over 1200 companies in Mauritius.

The cooperation framework targets 5 key pillars:
* Economic Advocacy;
* Private Sector and Sustainable Development;
* Ease-of-Doing-Business and Policy Examinations;
* International Trade Cooperation; and
* A Peer-to-Peer Programme with Business Mauritius.

The inaugural Peer-to-Peer programme will feature on in-country mission, to be held at the end of May.

This mission will focus on business leaders and private sector representation from the Pacific Fisheries sector.

Business challenges in the Pacific have been exacerbated by COVID-19. For the Pacific Fisheries sector, collective industry challenges have included air and sea freight charges, resourcing of fleets, cost of doing business, compliance with regards to fishing license requirements, and the sustainability of fisheries collective associations.

Where there are opportunities to glean from business and business organisations from other regions, it is an opportunity not to be missed.

Country missions such as Pere Learning, Industry Visits, Trade Delegations etc are ways to help advance both diplomatic and economic interests. In this instance, the Pacific Peer Learning Mission to Mauritius is intended to promote business competitiveness, share learnings and experiences, and foster business to business collaboration.
