Request for Proposal: Economic impacts of the Australian almond industry (AL19004)
Horticulture Innovation Australia (Hort Innovation) is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $13.2 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $110 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.
Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: Economic impacts of the Australian almond industry (AL19004).
The objectives of the services are to provide the almond industry with evidence of the socio-economic benefits they provide to rural communities and the Australian economy, as well as demonstrate the sustainability credentials of the industry and the major risks for the industry. These contributions must include:
• The direct impacts from the almond industry. For example, hiring 100 workers to prune almond trees has a direct employment effect of 100 jobs.
• Indirect impacts on other industries from economic activity in the almond industry. The almond industry purchases goods and services as inputs, which also require purchases of their own, resulting in a ripple effect through the economy.
• Induced effects from added consumption. Production in the almond industry and the industries who receive the indirect impacts provides incomes to those who work in these industries. For example, almond growers and their employees spend their incomes at local grocery stores and these local firms have workers of their own.
The following characteristics would also be beneficial for the industry:
• Results at the Australia-wide level, but also disaggregated down to specific almond-growing regions
• Disaggregate impacts to potential sections of the value chain, such as processing and production
• Environmental indicators such as greenhouse gases, water use and waste
• Highlight the greatest risks to industry production, translating these through applying shocks to the model and their impact on production and employment
• The role of exports in generating value for the almond industry and Australian economy
• Any other scenarios, indicators or variables which demonstrate the economic, social or environmental impact of the industry.
Hort Innovation has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) document that provides background information, outlines the scope of services, the procurement process and the information required from interested parties. The RFP may be downloaded from www.tenders.net (you will need to be a member of tenders.net to access this information).
The closing date for responses is 5.00pm (AEDT), 10 January 2020.
