Request for Proposal: MU20001 Mushrooms as a cholesterol lowering food
Horticulture Innovation Australia (Hort Innovation) is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $15.1 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $120 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.
Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: Mushrooms as a cholesterol lowering food (MU20001).
The objectives of the services are to:
• Conduct nutrition analysis to test the beta-glucan levels of fresh Australian mushrooms.
• Develop an application to FSANZ to include mushrooms in the high-level health claim: beta-glucan reduces blood cholesterol.
• If necessary and requested by FSANZ as evidence, conduct a small scale single-blind crossover randomised control trial to assess mushrooms and their impact on lowering cholesterol in a sample population group.
• Present findings to FSANZ for review and update of the Food Standards Code to allow mushrooms to make the claim “beta-glucan reduces blood cholesterol”.
• Develop a strategy to disseminate the mushroom and heart health claim with health professional influencers and key opinion leaders.
Hort Innovation has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) document that provides background information, outlines the scope of services, the procurement process and the information required from interested parties.
