Horticulture Innovation Australia (Hort Innovation) is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $15.1 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $15.1 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $120 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.
Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: Mushrooms and their potential health benefits of lowering blood cholesterol (MU20001).
The objectives of the project are to be delivered in two phases:
Phase one:

1. Profile beta-glucan levels in dry and wet tissue weight for three main mushroom varieties in the Australian market including: Agaricus bisporus (button, cup, flat and brown mushroom) as well as exotic mushroom varieties including shiimeji and oyster (Pleurotus).
2. Compare the mode of action for beta-glucan in mushrooms to that in oats to establish if they function in the same way to reduce human blood cholesterol.

Phase two:

• If the beta-glucan molecule in mushrooms is identified to be similar to oats, apply to FSANZ as per section 3.2.6 of the FSANZ Application Handbook to amend the high-level health claim in schedule 4 to vary claim conditions for beta-glucan.
• Recommend strategies and linkages to relevant R&D investments and the mushroom marketing program to disseminate and promote the beta-glucan health claim in mushrooms to promote their health benefits.

Hort Innovation has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) document that provides background information, outlines the scope of services, the procurement process and the information required from interested parties.
