Hort Innovation is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $9 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $100 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.
Hort Innovation through the VegPRO initiative is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: Postharvest management of vegetable crops (VG15028).
The objectives of the services being sought are to deliver a total of eight one-day postharvest management workshops across Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The training is to be delivered to all those within the vegetable industry whose role affects the postharvest management of vegetables.
The areas identified for workshops and potential dates are:
• NSW – Sydney markets – 10 May 2018
• QLD –Location TBC – 22 May 2018
• NT – Darwin – 31 May 2018
• VIC – Wonthaggi – 20 June 2018
• VIC – Lindenow – 27 June 2018
• TAS – location to be confirmed – 26 July 2018
• VIC – Werribee – 7 August 2018
• QLD – one further workshop may be required TBC.
The workshop content will cover but not necessarily be limited to:
• An overview of postharvest physiology of vegetable crops and how to apply this knowledge
• The impact of production factors on postharvest life and post-harvest diseases
• Overview of hygiene and handling practices and their impact on quality
• Harvesting systems to avoid physical damage, contamination and loss of quality
• Grading and packing facilities, equipment and procedures to avoid physical damage, contamination and loss of quality
• Management of environmental conditions i.e. temperature, humidity, controlled atmospheres and ethylene (e.g. ethylene sources, treatment, exclusion and removal)
• Sanitation and procedures to prevent decay, control insects and to meet food safety assurance
• Packing to protect produce and extend shelf life
• Energy use of postharvest management procedures and facilities.
In addition to these workshops the successful provider will be required to generate a workbook (action planning guide) to be used in conjunction with the workshops. This will give the attendees a resource that they can develop during the workshop and implement in their own business ensuring both assimilation and implementation of the training being delivered.
Hort Innovation has prepared a Request for Proposal (RFP) document that provides background information, outlines the scope of services, the procurement process and the information required from interested parties.
