Request for Proposal: AP22001 PIPS4 Profit - Pest and Disease Management
Horticulture Innovation Australia (Hort Innovation) is a not-for-profit, grower-owned Research and Development Corporation (RDC) for Australia’s $14.4 billion horticulture industry. Hort Innovation invests around $110 million in research and development (R&D) and marketing programs annually to provide benefit to industry and the wider community.
Hort Innovation is seeking a suitably qualified, experienced and capable delivery partner for the project: PIPS4 Profit - Pest and Disease Management (AP22001).
The project aims to deliver on the following key objectives:
• Develop effective and efficient monitoring tools for key pests and beneficials§.
• Develop evidence-based economic thresholds to inform pesticide application decisions.
• Establish pest tolerance levels beyond which pest attacks cause significant economic lossβ.
• Develop effective orchard management practices that support (i) habitat and food source availability, balanced parasitoid/predatory populations and reduce soil compaction and soil loss.
• Demonstrate the efficacy of biological control of major pests and diseases, such as codling moth, light brown apple moth, apple scab and root rot€.
• Develop a risk matrix for the key pests in each growing region indicating the efficacy of the available control options and the need for adoption of a suite of integrated management tools.

§Attention should be given to tools that support long-term automated data capture. There is also a potential to incorporate tools that provide an understanding of the landscape (i.e., nearby blocks) influences upon natural predator, parasitoid, and pollinator populations within an orchard.
βNewly developed economic thresholds and pest tolerance levels should be updated in the apple and pear pes and disease manual.
€Importation of Mastrus culture and initial release is currently underway within PIPS3. Continuous release is conditional on demonstration of cost and long-term establishment including modeling evidence to demonstrate potential efficacy and long-term establishment.
