Tender Details
Groundwater is one of the most reliable sources of fresh water available to many atoll nations in the Pacific.
Groundwater is pumped from shallow wells or “galleries” which are horizontal wells constructed just below the
water table and designed to skim the fresh groundwater from the freshwater lens and minimise potential
salinization.
In Kiribati, the Bonriki water reserve is the main supply of freshwater for over 56,000 people. The groundwater is
abstracted from a system of 21 galleries and pumped through a treatment plant to the community. The Bonriki
water reserve is the most used and relied upon aquifer in the Pacific. The salinity of the water supplied is critical
in ensuring that it is acceptable to the users for its intended purpose, drinking, washing, cooking, etc. Upper
salinity limits for the water provided have been set by the operators and government of Kiribati.
