The EU and MFAT funded Kiritimati Island Water Projects, implemented by The Pacific Community (SPC) in partnership with the Ministry of Line and Phoenix Islands Development (MLPID) and other Government of Kiribati stakeholders, are the third major water project on Kiritimati Island in 25 years. Following the AusAID funded KWASP in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the SPC implemented IDWSKIP from 2014 to 2018, the current projects involve decommissioning old Yellowtail wind pumps, rehabilitating suitable wind pumps, and installing a new Southern Cross wind pump. Despite Kiritimati's excellent wind resource, none of the wind pumps are fully operational as of March 2025 due to a lack of parts and maintenance. MLPID’s crane will assist with the necessary decommissioning, rehabilitation, and installation works.
