Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, with a 2024 population of roughly 8,150 people, is a key development hub for Kiribati and is expected to more than double in population in the coming 10 to 20 years. However, power supply remains inadequate across the island even for current needs. Kiritimati’s electricity network is currently susceptible to regular power outages (insufficient supply capacity), high operational costs (reliance on diesel generation), poor cost recovery (generation and public utility institutional inefficiencies) and limited reach (lack of access to residential and commercial leases).
The EKLIPSE1 project funded by Government of Australia (GoA) and implemented by Pacific Community (SPC) in partnership with Government of Kiribati (GoK), targets improvements to Kiritimati Island’s electrification infrastructure, capacity, efficiency and access, and the associated socio-economic and environmental benefits that ensue.
