Biofouling—the accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls—is a significant contributor to invasive aquatic species (IAS) transfer and to increased fuel consumption due to hull drag.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Biofouling Guidelines (2011) provide best practices for biofouling management, but uptake has been slow, particularly in developing countries. In support of this, the Pacific Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC Pacific), through its regional TEST Biofouling (Accelerating Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies through demonstration pilots to reduce biofouling and related emissions) project, seeks to pilot biofouling management technologies in Pacific Island Countries. This consultancy will deliver a national pilot demonstration of in-water hull cleaning technology in Fiji, including technical evaluation and training, aligned with the TEST Biofouling project objectives.
