Background
The Western Downs Regional Council area is located in south-west Queensland, about 300 kilometres north-west of the Brisbane CBD. The Western Downs Regional Council area is bounded by Banana Shire in the north, the South Burnett Regional Council area in the north-east, the Toowoomba Regional Council area in the south-east, Balonne Shire and the Goondiwindi Regional Council area in the south-west, and the Maranoa Regional Council area in the west.
The Western Downs Regional Council area is predominantly rural, with numerous small townships and villages. The largest township is Dalby, with smaller townships at Bell, Chinchilla, Jandowae, Miles, Tara and Wandoan, and several villages. The Council area encompasses a total land area of about 38,000 square kilometres. Rural land is used largely for agriculture, particularly grain and cotton growing, with some sheep and cattle grazing and broadacre farming. Forestry and mining are also important industries, with the area being home to oil fields, coal mines, power stations and gas exploration.
Miles
The charming town of Miles sits at the crossroads of the Warrego and Leichhardt Highways. Home to a historical museum, a vibrant arts community and the biennial Back to the Bush Festival held when the first wildflowers appear. The nearby country villages of Drillham, Dulacca, Wandoan and Condamine.
Caliguel Lagoon
Approximately 7km south of Condamine is the attractive Caliguel Lagoon; “Caliguel” being the name of an early pastoral run in the area. In good seasons, the lagoon presents a fine stretch of water and is a favourite location for locals and visitors to enjoy waterskiing, boating, swimming, fishing and bird watching. As part of Council's COVID-19 Recovery Package, Council has delivered improvements to the popular recreation spot, which enhance facilities for visitors and preserve the natural environment. This is one of several improvement projects which took place across the Western Downs to stimulate local economies and boost the region's great liveability.
Condamine
Located 33km south of Miles on the banks of the meandering Condamine River, Condamine is home to the famous Condamine or ‘Bullfrog’ Bell, created by a local blacksmith.
Drillham
Twenty kilometres west of Miles and once a thriving settlement, Drillham’s railway weir on the creek provided water for steam locomotives. Reminders of these times can still be seen by the creek and roadside.
Dulacca
A further 22km west along the Warrego Highway, Dulacca was established in 1879 with the coming of the railway. Discover the town’s history and wartime contribution at the Roy Henderson Park. Enjoy a cold drink at the Pink Pub on the Hill, known as the ‘Pink Pub on the Hill’,dating from 1908.
Wandoan
The charming wheat and cattle town of Wandoan is a welcome stop between Miles and Taroom along the Leichhardt Way, set on a backdrop of towering grain silos and prime farming land. Discover a proud heritage and some of the region’s best bush camping and fishing spots. South of Wandoan lies the small settlement of Guluguba, home to just over 40 farming families. Originally a mixed cropping area, the area now successfully produces beef cattle and grain.
Council recognises the importance of professional cleaning services to promote a safe and healthy space, provide high-quality cleaned facilities and amenities and to make a good impression for both locals and tourists enjoying the region.
